Lille, France (SportsNetwork.com) - The great Roger Federer lifted Switzerland to its first-ever Davis Cup title on Sunday when he whipped Frances Richard Gasquet in straight sets. Federer defeated Gasquet in 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 fashion to give the visiting Swiss an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie on an indoor red clay surface at Lilles Pierre Mauroy Stadium. The 17-time Grand Slam king Federer has now captured every coveted title in mens tennis, with the exception of an Olympic gold medal in singles. He paired with his current Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka to win a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. The 33-year-old Federer pulled out of last weeks championship match at the prestigious ATP World Tour Finals in London because of a back injury, which appeared to slow him here on Friday, but not Sunday in Lille, where he would not be denied. Federer was ultra clean on Day 3, striking seven aces, without committing a double fault, and breaking Gasquet five times, while not getting broken in the rout. The iconic Swiss struck 28 more winners in the 1-hour, 52-minute match (62-34). Switzerland headed into Sundays reverse singles with a 2-1 lead against the host French after Federer and Wawrinka teamed up for a straight-set doubles victory over Gasquet and Julien Benneteau on Saturday. The capable Gasquet replaced Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the French draw on Sunday. The former Australian Open runner-up Tsonga lost to this years Aussie champion Wawrinka in four sets in Fridays opening singles rubber, while Day 1s other match saw Gael Monfils upset the former world No. 1 and currently second-ranked Federer in straights. The Davis Cup, which was first contested in 1900, has been captured by France on nine occasions, while the Swiss were seeking that elusive maiden championship. Switzerland finished as a runner-up back in 1992. The Swiss are captained by Severin Luthi, while the French are guided by former Aussie Open runner-up Arnaud Clement. Switzerland is now 3-10 all-time versus France in Davis Cup play. The two nations last met in a 2004 quarterfinal, which was won by the French. France was seeking its first title in 13 years. Sean Dyches side confirmed their automatic promotion with a 1-0 victory over QPR on Monday, and the clubs board and scouting department are already working with the manager on plans to improve the playing squad ahead of next season. We want to improve the team, Garlick told Sky Sports News HQ. The emphasis is on quality not quantity, but bearing in mind that balance we have always got to find - between improving, and making sure if the worst-case scenario happens and we dont make it, weve got a sustainable plan for the next four to five years. Burnley celebrate promotion after beating QPR 1-0 (Mark Robinson/SkyBet) Its fair to say last time in the division we had to pay back a lot of external debt, and debt to directors. We also had to redevelop our training ground - that was a top priority - and we also bought our ground back, which we didnt own at the time. That cost about £20-25m, and this time we dont have to do that - we are debt-free.Its fair to say well have an extra pound or two, so we can give it an extra push, whilst maintaining that balance between trying and stay in it whilst knowing if we dont, well have a future for the club. On the financial significance of earning promotion, Garlick confirmed Burnley would receive an unprecedented cash injection from the Premier League. Its well documented that the club finishing bottom gets just shy of £100m, so in black and white terms, that is what its worth to us, he explained. The football club is the cathedral for the town, the fans come there to worship and their prayers have been answered. Burnley chairman, Mike Garlick There are other spin offs, sponsorships, extra people visiting the town - its had its tough times so this can only help. The last time we were in the Premier League, we had to find a balance between trying to stay in it, and investing for the future and making sure in five years time we still had a club, and making sure we could still pay the wages. There are lots of examples of Premier League clubs who have been in it, got relegated, and that are now struggling. We know who they are and dont want to be one of those clubs. Sean Dyche has been a revealation, according to Mike Garlick Garlick paid tribute to manager Dyche, who was able to help the club deal with the disappointment of relegation, and secure an immediate return, seemingly stronnger than when they were promoted two years ago.ddddddddddddWe owe him everything, Garlick admitted. From the day we hired him almost four years ago, hes been a revelation. The main element he brings is the element of camaraderie, teamwork and hard work. All of those things come together, and if you havent got that, you arent going to win anything. Its great for the fans and the town. Highlights from Burnleys win over QPR in the Sky Bet Championship Burnleys promotion may have been slightly overshadowed by the incredible achievement of Leicester, who won the Premier League hours after Burnleys promotion to the top flight was confirmed.Garlick was quick to send his congratulations to the newly crowned champions, but warned his clubs supporters not to expect a title push at Turf Moor next season. Leicester Citys Premier League win is an inspiration to teams like Burnley It must be fantastic, and well done to them, but if youre suggesting next year we might go and win it, I think that might be difficult! I think if you look back at the last 20 years, its almost been predictable what the top four is going to be, and that has certainly changed this season, he said.I dont think youll get a Leicester winning Premier League every season, but the top four or five clubs might be different over the next five to 10 years. Its well documented that the money is going up in the Premier League, and the differential between the top and the bottom clubs has narrowed.Watch Burnley attempt to wrap up the Sky Bet Championship title when they travel to Charlton on Saturday, live on Sky Sports 2 HD from 12pm.
