SAN FRANCISCO -- Doug Fister said he never thought about what played out his last time in San Francisco once he took the mound again at AT&T Park, except for how to approach the familiar foes at the plate. The right-hander turned in a solid performance each game -- and this time he got the result he wanted. Fister flipped the script from his previous start in San Francisco during the 2012 World Series, tossing seven scoreless innings to help the Washington Nationals beat Madison Bumgarner and the Giants 2-1 on Tuesday night. "Its still part of how I attack a hitter or two," Fister said. "There are some of the same guys that are over there now. Some of that experience came through and determined what I chose to throw." Bumgarner and the Giants foiled Fister and the Detroit Tigers 2-0 in Game 2 of their World Series sweep. The rematch, albeit on a regular-season stage with a different team, played out in Fisters favour. Jayson Werth and Denard Span each drove in a run during a two-run fifth to snap Bumgarners career-best, six-game winning streak. Werth also threw out a runner at the plate from right field in the sixth. Fister (5-1) allowed eight hits, struck out three and walked one for his fifth straight win. "It was a constant battle tonight," Fister said, "but we were able to do what we wanted to do." Brandon Crawford tripled leading off the ninth and scored on Brandon Hicks groundout for San Franciscos only run. Tyler Clippard escaped a jam in the eighth and Rafael Soriano rebounded in the ninth for his 13th save. Washington has won three in a row and nine of 11. "The Giants have certainly made a habit of coming back and coming back late," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "They put together some pretty good at-bats late and gave themselves a chance. We were able to get it tonight, but you dont want to mess with that too much." The Nationals stopped San Franciscos five-game winning streak with a 9-2 victory in Mondays series opener. And they continued to slow down the team with the best record in baseball by beating its hottest pitcher on a windy, chilly night in San Franciscos waterfront ballpark. Span drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Werth singled home another against Bumgarner in the fifth. That was all Washington needed to end Bumgarners winning streak. Bumgarner (8-4) allowed eight hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one intentionally. The tall left-hander with the deceptive fastball was selected NL player of the month for May after going 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA. He hadnt lost since April 28 against San Diego. "Theyve got a well-rounded team," Bumgarner said. "It comes down to whether they execute or not, but theyve definitely got the talent over there." It was a far better feeling for Fister than his last start in San Francisco, which came on a warm October evening in 2012. He was struck squarely in the head by Gregor Blancos line drive in the World Series, a ball hit so hard it caromed into shallow centre field, though the 6-foot-8 pitcher appeared unhurt and stayed in the game. Every time the Giants put together a few hits this time, Fister flexed his best stuff -- and so did his new club. In the third, San Francisco put two runners on before Buster Posey struck out. Pablo Sandoval, who finished with three hits and a walk, and Michael Morse singled to start the fourth before Fister induced three consecutive flyouts. In the sixth, Sandoval doubled and tried to score on Crawfords two-out single to right. Instead, Werth charged in to field the hard-hit ball and easily threw out the portly Sandoval at the plate. Clippard allowed two baserunners with one out in the eighth before completing his 20th consecutive scoreless inning. NOTES: Nationals C Wilson Ramos left in the eighth with right hamstring tightness. Brown posted a career-best 93.36 points to lead Joshua Farris by 2.96, while four-time U.S. champ Jeremy Abbott was third, another .47 back.Brown still doesnt do a quad jump, all but a necessity to contend for medals at major international competitions. But he can still rack up points with the rest of his performance, which proved to be plenty at the U.S. Championships, where Farris and Abbott didnt do a quad, either.Brown landed his four triples with ease Friday. Hooking his thumbs in his sequined suspenders and running his hand over that famous ponytail, he kicked and tapped his feet in perfect rhythm to the bluesy Juke.Brown, who finished ninth at the Sochi Games, insisted before this event that he wouldnt wilt at being a favourite for the first time. Its a refrain often repeated by athletes; the difference is that Brown seems to always make it come to life. You get to perform to people and for people — I just kind of look at that as an exciting moment, he explained, as exuberant as ever.He had struggled with his triple axel during the Grand Prix season. No such trouble Friday. But no matter how smoothly he lands that jump, Brown will keep hearing questions about that missing quad. The answer is always the same: It will be in his repertoire at Marchs world championships only if its ready and if its good and solid and consistent and doesnt mess up my mental state, he said.So much when you go to a competition is the mental side, Brown added. You want to go in knowing you can do everything in your program. I dont ever want to go in with the quad and think too much about that one jump and take away from the rest of the program and the performance of it.Farris and Abbott do quads, though each decided to drop it from his short program. Farris has struggled with an ankle injury and figured building confidence was more important. He plans a quad in his free skate. The 29-year-old Abbottt revamped his technique and equipment over the summer and is still refining his quad.ddddddddddddI am so happy to be sitting here with these two men: I think we made a nice strong statement that figure skating can be an art as well as a sport, Abbott said.Farris, also 20, won the 2013 world junior title ahead of Brown and was fourth at senior nationals that year. But when Brown made a major breakthrough at the 2014 U.S. Championships to finish second behind Abbott and earn the Americans second Olympic berth, Farris was fourth again.Hes always admired how Brown draws in the crowd and had worked hard to connect more. On Friday, he did just that.Im so surprised I performed as well as I did, Farris said.He was terrified before his program. No wonder considering what happened the last time this event was in Greensboro four years ago, when, as he put it, I had probably the worst experience anybody has ever had at nationals before. He tore a muscle in his hip during a fall in practice, went to the emergency room with a severe allergic reaction between the short and long programs, then broke his leg during his free skate.Abbott has plenty of warm memories from past nationals, and his 2014 title was supposed to be his last appearance. But he rethought his retirement after finishing fifth at the world championships after another dismal performance at the Olympics, still seeking that elusive major international medal. This was his first competition since his father, who had suffered from Parkinsons disease, died earlier this month. When his program ended, Abbott kissed his hand and raised it to the sky.In the ice dance, Madison Chock and Evan Bates hold a slim lead over fellow Olympians Maia and Alex Shibutani.Chock and Bates won the short dance with 73.95 points, just .11 ahead of the Shibutani siblings. Chock and Bates won silver and the Shibutanis bronze the last two years at nationals behind six-time U.S. champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White. Now Davis and White are taking a break after becoming the first American Olympic ice dance gold medallists . Their teammates from Sochi are looking to extend the countrys newfound success in the sport. ' ' '
